The Centre and its mission:

The NSW Retinal Dystrophy Research Centre

- Is a research group at the University of Sydney committed to further the understanding of degenerative diseases of the retina. Our work concerns the diseases retinitis pigmentosa, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment and retinopathy of prematurity. This group of diseases share several common features, which makes research into each relevant to the other.

- Seeks to deploy its research for the benefit of those suffering retinal degeneration, by inventing therapy, by identifying opportunities for prevention, by going out to meet clinicians who claim successful therapy and critically assess their claims.

- Maintains wide collaborations with groups with complementary expertise in Israel, Italy, Germany, the United States and elsewhere in Australia.

- Brings ranking scientists from interstate and overseas to the Centre to pursue collaborations and share expertise and insights. Despite the immediacy of email and the fax, personal contact between colleagues remains the key to scientific collaboration.

- Trains young scientists to its ranks, developing the commitment of able scientists to these diseases.
